In July 2021, the Pegasus Project revealed that more than 6,000 Algerian numbers had been selected by Morocco as potential targets for surveillance with Pegasus. The phone numbers of former Prime Minister Noureddine Bedoui and of Minister of Foreign Affairs Ramtane Lamamra appeared in the list.

In the aftermath of the Pegasus Project, Algeria’s public prosecutor ordered an investigation into the allegations that the country might have been targeted with the spyware. Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Ramtane Lamamra announced that his country intended to end diplomatic relations with Morocco.
